Eleanor Aphay

Already the first state qualifier in Riverside Brookfield High School girls wrestling history, senior Eleanor Aphay added another first Saturday.

Aphay became the Bulldogs’ first regional champion when she captured the 125-pound title at the Shepard Regional.

Aphay (16-2) won the title match with a pin in 5:15 over Naperville Central freshman Dezi Azar (25-3).

This was the first year of regional advancement for girls wrestling after having only sectionals the past two seasons. Aphay will make her third state trip with a top-four finish at the Schaumburg Sectional.

Top-three regional finishers advance to sectionals. Junior Danely Villagomez (22-5), who became the Bulldogs’ second state qualifier in 2023, was fourth at 140, losing the advancing third-place match to Plainfield North’s Viktoria Rodnikova (19-2) with a pin in 4:36.
