WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – We could have an update today on an official date for when sports betting will be allowed in North Carolina.
On the agenda for the North Carolina State Lottery Commission meeting on Wednesday is an action item on “sports wagering authorization.” The commission is the one that sets the date for when betting begins.
It’s important to point out that Friday is the deadline for betting organizations to file their letter of intent to operate here in North Carolina.
The date for when sports betting will officially be in play has been pushed back repeatedly. January was the initial date for the rollout, but that was pushed back to June.
We know it won’t happen in time for the Super Bowl, but state law says it must be operational by June 15. Governor Cooper recently said he hopes betting can start by the time March Madness rolls around.
Money from sports wagering could have a big impact here in southeastern North Carolina … with UNCW expecting around 300-thousand dollars annually…
UNCW’s Athletic Director, Michael Oblinger, sent a statement to WECT saying:
“We’re excited to be able to use the funds from sports betting to help enhance the student-athlete experience at UNCW. From the day I started here at UNCW, my goal was to make UNCW the place student-athletes and staff wanted to be, and these funds will bolster several areas of that focus. This is a tremendous opportunity for our department to grow holistically.”
The lottery commission meets at 10 o’clock on Wednesday. This story will be updated as we learn more.
