GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – A new report is looking into the causes of burnout, injuries, and what can happen if young athletes are pushed too hard.

We know there are a lot of physical and mental benefits for kids participating in sports. The American Academy of Pediatrics has a new report coming in next month’s issue of Pediatrics that outlines sports-related injuries, like those caused by repetitive stress.

It says kids are more susceptible to getting hurt because their growing bones are less tolerant of that stress.

The report says about 70% of young athletes drop out of these organized activities by age 13.

This can be because of overtraining, injury or burnout impacting mental health.

AAP says sports are such a powerful and fun motivator to keep kids physically and mentally active, but some youth may feel pressure from parents, coaches and others to measure success only by performance.

Experts say pediatricians can help parents determine what sports activities would benefit their child the most. AAP recommends you go to a doctor who can examine your child and talk about this.

Another suggestion is that all adults — parents and coaches — make sure they’re fostering a positive experience for their young athlete.

When there are signs of overtraining or burnout, AAP says, it’s time to make changes.
