LAFAYETTE — Six different schools from three different counties are represented in the Journal and Courier Athletes of the Week vote after outstanding performances by three boys and girls between Jan. 15 and Jan. 20.

One gymnast scored big during two meets in Lafayette while a Carroll senior put on a show for the ages with his scoring in Flora. Two basketball players from Lafayette and Seeger dominated the court while a wrestler and swimmer each earned conference titles.

Chris Huerta

School: Carroll

Sport: Basketball

Class: Senior

Team contributions: Huerta scored a program record 46 points and sank 11 3-pointers, also a program record to lead Carroll over Faith Christian 74-60 last Saturday. Huerta broke 45-year record once held by Nick Beaver in 1975. Carroll is 9-4 and have won five of its last six games since Dec. 28.

Eli Blossom

School: Faith Christian

Sport: Wrestling

Class: Senior

Team contributions: Blossom, a 150-pound wrestler, set a new Eagles program for wins and won three matches via pinfall to win the Midwest Conference title. All of Blossom’s victories occurred in the first period.

Anthony Korchnak

School: Central Catholic

Sport: Swimming

Class: Sophomore

Team contributions: Korchnak ripped and kicked through the water at a pace that showcased both speed and endurance during the Hoosier Conference Championships last Saturday. The sophomore won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.96 and won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.89.

Micah Wright

School: Harrison

Sport: Gymnastics

Class: Senior

Team contributions: Wright who qualified for the 2023 State All-Around is showing why there’s still plenty more to achieve in her final year. Wright won two All-Around titles during a 7-team meet at performed clean saltos during her floor routine and landed cleanly during two gymnastics meets held at Lafayette Area Gymnastics Club last Wednesday and an 8-team meet at Elite Gymnastic Club on Saturday.

Lillie Graves

School: McCutcheon

Sport: Basketball

Class: Freshman

Team contributions: Graves’ reputation is quickly growing as she continues to have more impressive performances like she had last Friday against Anderson. Graves scored 37 points to lead McCutcheon over Anderson 78-63 to win last Wednesday. Graves is being recruited by multiple Power 4 conference schools including Purdue and is averaging over 20 points per game throughout the season.

Rylea Wetz

School: Seeger

Sport: Basketball

Class: Junior

Team contributions: Wetz scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds to beat North Montgomery 32-26 last Tuesday. Wetz leads Seeger and averaged 12.2 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game.
